Colony Collapse
Sometimes, I think we lose sight of what is important in our lives. I know I have constantly been assaulted by negative news stories claiming that the end of the world is nigh, nuclear weapons, economy held on a shoe string, blah blah blah. Let’s talk about the real problem we face here, colony collapse syndrome. No seriously, this is one of the most serious problems we as a society face today.
I don’t know if you guys know this not being in the “industry” like I have the gift of enjoying, but honeybees are really important believe it or not. To throw around some facts and figures, (cause why not, the news throws around scary numbers why can’t I?) there are roughly about 300 commercial crops that are produced in the world today and roughly 80-85 percent of those are pollinated by insects. On top of that, seven crops that are dependent on bees for pollination, including squash, cacao, mango, cardamom, cranberries, and high brush berries could contribute to 1.25 billion dollars in loss annually.
I want to take a second and think about that number because sometimes I think we lose sight of how big a number like 1.25 billion truly is so here is one example, 1,250,000,000.00. Not convinced that’s a lot? Okay. Let’s say you are really weird and like to count things constantly and you are really good and can count one number a second on end without sleeping. It would take you 14,467 days to count to 1.25 billion.
The point that I am trying to make here is that that is a heck of a lot of money, and personally, losing 1.25 billion dollars sounds like a really sucky thing to do every year in perpetuity without honeybees.
That’s part of why we founded this company. We don’t want to lose our honeybees and we don’t want to risk the ability of our hard-working farmers and the crops they harvest to feed us. That’s why we donate a portion of the cost of every item we sell here towards research to find a solution to colony collapse syndrome.
